Scientific notation

Scientific notation, also referred to as scientific form, standard index form, or standard form, is a way of writing very large or very small numbers without having to write out every digit. This is written as a number between 1 and 10 multiplied by a power of 10 and is represented by the formula:
a·10b
In which 1≤a<10.
The power that 10 is raised to can be thought of as the number of places to the right (when the power is positive) or left (when the power is negative) that the decimal point needs to move.

For example:
5.6·109 is the scientific notation of 5,600,000,000, where the decimal point moves nine places to the right. 5·10-9 is the scientific notation of 0.000000005, where the decimal point moves nine places to the left.
