Order of operations

The order of operations is a set of rules that tells us what order we should use when solving mathematical expressions. Math problems often contain subtraction, addition, multiplication, exponents, division, and parentheses, and the order of operations tells us which we should address first.

The order of operations is:
1. Solve any operations in parentheses. If there are multiple operations inside parentheses, apply the order of operations inside the parentheses.
2. Solve exponents (powers and roots).
3. Multiply or divide. Moving from left to right, multiply and/or divide—whichever comes first.
4. Add or subtract. Lastly, moving from left to right, add and/or subtract—whichever comes first.

To help remember the correct order of operations, many use the acronyms:
PEMDAS (US and France), BODMAS (UK), or BEDMAS (Canada)
Parentheses/Brackets.
Exponents/Orders.
Multiplication and Division (from left to right).
Addition and Subtraction (from left to right).
