Approximation

Approximation in mathematics is defined as a quantity close in value to but not the same as a desired quantity. Two mathematical symbols denote approximate equality: a wavy equal sign (≈) and a dotted equal sign (≒ or ≓).

Approximation is often used when an precise form or integer is not known or easily obtainable as well as with irrational numbers, such as π. Approximation can turn a complex calculation, for example, involving decimals into one that uses integers, or whole numbers, making it easier to solve. This is achieved by rounding the decimal values before performing any further operations.
