 6.2      Find the Vertex of   y = -49t²+250t+10

Parabolas have a highest or a lowest point called the Vertex .   Our parabola opens down and accordingly has a highest point (AKA absolute maximum) .    We know this even before plotting  "y"  because the coefficient of the first term, -49 , is negative (smaller than zero). 

 Each parabola has a vertical line of symmetry that passes through its vertex. Because of this symmetry, the line of symmetry would, for example, pass through the midpoint of the two  x -intercepts (roots or solutions) of the parabola. That is, if the parabola has indeed two real solutions.

  y = -49.0 * 2.55 * 2.55 + 250.0 * 2.55 + 10.0
or   y = 328.878

Solve Quadratic Equation by Completing The Square

 6.3     Solving   -49t²+250t+10 = 0 by Completing The Square .

 Multiply both sides of the equation by  (-1)  to obtain positive coefficient for the first term:
 49t²-250t-10 = 0  Divide both sides of the equation by  49  to have 1 as the coefficient of the first term :
   t²-(250/49)t-(10/49) = 0

Add  10/49  to both side of the equation :
   t²-(250/49)t = 10/49

Now the clever bit: Take the coefficient of  t , which is  250/49 , divide by two, giving  125/49 , and finally square it giving  15625/2401 

Add  15625/2401  to both sides of the equation :
  On the right hand side we have :
   10/49  +  15625/2401   The common denominator of the two fractions is  2401   Adding  (490/2401)+(15625/2401)  gives  16115/2401 
  So adding to both sides we finally get :
   t²-(250/49)t+(15625/2401) = 16115/2401

Things which are equal to the same thing are also equal to one another. Since
   t²-(250/49)t+(15625/2401) = 16115/2401 and
   t²-(250/49)t+(15625/2401) = (t-(125/49))²
then, according to the law of transitivity,
   (t-(125/49))² = 16115/2401

The Square Root Principle says that When two things are equal, their square roots are equal.

Now, applying the Square Root Principle to  Eq. #6.3.1  we get:
   t-(125/49) = √ 16115/2401

Add  125/49  to both sides to obtain:
   t = 125/49 + √ 16115/2401

Since a square root has two values, one positive and the other negative
   t² - (250/49)t - (10/49) = 0
   has two solutions:
  t = 125/49 + √ 16115/2401
   or
  t = 125/49 - √ 16115/2401

Note that  √ 16115/2401 can be written as
  √ 16115  / √ 2401   which is √ 16115  / 49

Solve Quadratic Equation using the Quadratic Formula

Can  √ 64460 be simplified ?

Yes!   The prime factorization of  64460   is
   2•2•5•11•293 
To be able to remove something from under the radical, there have to be  2  instances of it (because we are taking a square i.e. second root).

√ 64460   =  √ 2•2•5•11•293   =
                ±  2 • √ 16115

  √ 16115   , rounded to 4 decimal digits, is  126.9449
 So now we are looking at:
           t  =  ( -250 ± 2 •  126.945 ) / -98

Two real solutions:

 t =(-250+√64460)/-98=(125-√ 16115 )/49= -0.040

or:

 t =(-250-√64460)/-98=(125+√ 16115 )/49= 5.142
